War On Photographers

At EditorialPhoto.Com you can find some interesting articles. One of those articles (very long one) has two parts (1 and 2) and called "War on Photographers". Do you want to know what is about? Here is an excerpt from there, which may give you an idea:
"If you are an assignment or freelance photographer, congratulations because you are on the road to extinction. Photographers, such as yourselves, have lost a war they didn't fight. Many of you didn't even realize that you've lost it...
"You are facing issues like right grabs, non payment from clients, non payment from stock agencies, large and small. Lost images, unscurpulous reps, bankruptcy filings, tight budgets, both real and imagined. We are going to try to deal with many of these issues as possible..."

Note: The photograph here is taken by Tech. Sgt. Jennifer C. Wallis, U.S. Air Force (available at DefenseLink).

The e-Commerce Safety Guide

One of my tasks to-do is to incorporate a shopping cart, so the visitors could by my photographs. Such endevour requires a merchant function enabling the visitors use credit cards. Currently I am looking closely on PayPal services. One of which is the Shopping Cart. PayPal is widely used and trusted; and visitors would not need to provide their credit card information as it is stated in PayPal's The e-Commerce Safety Guide:
"When purchasing something using PayPal, users simply carry out the transaction through their PayPal accounts, rather than a credit card. PayPal then charges each purchase to the individual’s credit card or checking account. Because all PayPal transactions are based on the user’s e-mail address, merchants never have access to the user’s account information. This method is safer, more secure and more convenient than providing financial information to multiple sites of individual sellers."
This guide provides a lot of information on online fraud, identity theft and similar topics.

"Lost" articles of NYIP

NYIP
New York Institute of Photography (NYIP) publishes various articles on its website. The articles cover all kinds of topics from equipment and photographer's website development to photography techniques. There is only one catch. If you miss the moment when the article is published and time passes, it's near to impossible to find the article. At least I could not find any kind of index or a sitemap. Though William Eric McFadden on his page of Ohio University website posts a list of articles from NYIP (along with other links) - just scroll down to "New York Institute of Photography" section.

Pricing - Response to a letter

I got an email from Chris, one of the visitors of my website. Chris asked about pricing, how to calculate the hourly rate for your services. When I responded my letter was big enough to be considered a small article, so I decided to post it here, so others would benefit from it as well. So here it goes.

The pricing question is a tough one. I myself have not figured out completely. But anyway I will try to help you out as much as I can at this point. Pricing is not only your compensation, but it has a few other sides - marketing and growth. Compensation is simple - it is price of the materials, rent, utilities (and such) and time you've spent on providing the service (and/or salaries you pay). So after that you are square - no gain, no debts. As well you can add deprecation of your equipment and preivious education time/costinto this category.
Then the next simple to explain is the growth - you have to move forward and grow, education as well could be here (depends how you look at it). The growth is profit, which you use in order to expand your business, buy new and better equipment, learn new stuff, train new assistant, and such.
