Beating the High Cost of Weddings: How We Did It, and How You Can Too

In this article the author shares his/her view on a wedding on a cheap. It is a viable option, especially for young couple with very tight budget. This article has a section about photography too and there are the following arguments:

An argument can be made that a professional photographer can capture that special moment better, but they’re also known to take a lot of pictures of the floral arrangement.

In my opinion there are two sides of wedding photographer: Memories and Art. The memories are probably the most important aspect of it and even mandatory. The Art is a nice to have, and nice to be proud of. And, of course, the art is a very subjective field of work, some people like it, some don't.
When you ask your guests to take pictures and bring them back, you rely on someone who may not even know how to use a camera. And even the person has a great expensive camera, the camera itself won't take the picture. Oh, I don't won't to discourage you, simply to warn - there are too many variables in the wedding that the wedding photographer has to be able to take care of. And it requires skills.
So, when a guest takes these pictures you get memories (and fuzzy sometimes), but not Art. And by the way, the guest is there to have fun, not to work. But if he or she is having fun, expect funny pictures.

How Image Stabilization Works

Image Stabilization
Thanks to the pointer provided by FotoHacker and the content by Nikon in the article called "VR (Vibration Reduction) System [Precise camera-shake compensation at every angle]" we can find out how the systems like VR and IS (Image Stabilization) actually work.

To compensate for image blur caused by camera shake, the angular velocity (amount of camera shake) should be detected accurately. Two angular velocity sensors are used in the VR System. One detects "pitching" (vertical movement), while the other detects "yawing" (horizontal movement). Diagonal movements are detected by combining the results of both sensors. These sensors detect camera movement as angular velocity every 1/1000 second...

White Balance, the Secret Weapon of RAW

In this interesting article Sara Frances describes her approach of taking care of the white balance (even before the exposure) in Photoshop Camera Raw, which could produce great results.

Why doesn’t anybody just tell us that raw has the artistic power of Ansel Adams’ chemical darkroom, his famous Zone System? Raw conversion is digital darkroom for adults—and so much easier!

It seems that most of us (who shoot in Raw) are missing an important procedure in our digital workflow, if do not pay the due attention to the white balance. Read it yourself and see where Sara leads us to.

Drunken Wedding Photographer Looses All Photographs

This sad story could serve as a good lesson on being a professional and refraining from drinking [alcohol] at a wedding. This young couple has lost all of their wedding pictures because their photographer got drunk at the reception and on his way home has lost the camera bag and the flash cards with the images.
It's hard to imagine what it feels in the shoes of the young couple when you loose the memorable images of the wedding.
