Book 'The Great Picture Hunt 2: The Art and Ethics of Feature Picture Hunting'

"The great photojournalists," Labelle says (the author of the book), "are not in love with the mechanics of photography-they are in love with people and with life. Photography is the brush they use to paint the world as they see it." In his book, which I just ordered and am looking forward to read through, he teaches us how to look for and find images that make great stories. SportShooter.com published a review which may help you to decide whether the book is for you and tells you what professional photojournalists think about this great book.

Light Painting

What an interesting approach to make a photograph I learned from the Workshop: Light Painting (video) at SportsShooter.com. The idea is that the photographer finds or sets a scene in almost complete darkness and then by using flashlights he casts a beam of light onto the objects within the scene. And all this time the camera records the images. The long exposures up to a few minutes are used to create such photographs.

Selecting a Subject

Considering that you are full with techniques, approaches and all that techical stuff, but still hungry for something more, something different. What else is left and where I can find that hidden knowledge? Here is an interesting excerpt about Selecting a Subject. That's kind of funny that we so rarely read or discuss what to shoot instead we talk about how to shoot, how to develop and postprocess the images. So this link would help you explore the other side of the photography coin.
Here is a quote about photography from the book: "The reason is that photography is only a tool, a vehicle, for expressing or transmitting a passion in something else. It is not the end result ... It comes down to the choice of subject. The photographer must have intense curiosity, not just a passing visual interest, in the theme of the pictures. This curiosity leads to intense examination, reading, talking, research and many, many failed attempts over a long period of time."

Learn from Student Portfolio comments

At SportsShooter.com I found a very interesting section SportsShooter.com: Student Portfolio. This section is dedicated to a contenst of student portfolio, as you already may guessed. The most important part is though not the pictures, which are very interesting by itself. But the comments, which are posted by professional photojournalists and sport photographers. By reading those comments and evaluating the photographs you may learn a great deal. So, I would really recommend to take a look and add the link to your bookmarks.
